Benchmarking the performance of a battery optimizer is not a simple task. Looking at one market alone, for example the intraday market, one could compare how much of the realized spreads the optimizer has been able to capture. However, most BESS are active in more than one market at the same time; for example, they may be doing energy arbitrage on the intraday market while also providing ancillary services such as Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) or automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR).
The KYOS Battery Index serves as a benchmark for battery optimizers. It shows the average daily revenue in the past months when trading a 2-hour battery in the intraday market across several European countries, including passive imbalance trading with 30% of the capacity for the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK. KYOS updates its index with quarterly frequency along with its Energy Storage Report. See more at https://www.kyos.com/energy-storage-report/
